general facts

what do dietitians do?

Dietitians are health professionals who are credentialed to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). MNT is an individualized process that assesses an person’s medical needs (health concerns, conditions, labs, medications), lifestyle and other unique factors to provide evidence based nutrition guidance. Based on these factors, dietitians will support individuals to make health-promoting change(s) to improve their nourishment status, using nutrition education and nutrition counseling.

To be credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDNs) must complete an accredited dietetic program, earn a Master degree (2024), complete 1000+ hours of supervised practice, sit for the national exam, meet state regulatory requirements, and stay up to date with continuing education requirements. Of note, ‘nutritionist’ do not undergo this training and cannot provide medical guidance.

What makes Soulshine different than other nutrition practices?

Nutrition guidance is provided through a non-diet, weight-neutral lens, meaning that nutrition conversations are not focused on weight and body size, but rather are centered around your health goals, with intention to create sustainable and meaningful behavior changes that align with each individuals values and abilities. We believe it is important to be at peace with your body and food in order to make sustainable changes that improve overall wellness which is why we incorporate the Intuitive Eating framework into our practice. Soulshine considers each individual’s relationship with food to be at the core of being able to improve state of nourishment and will work with you to strengthen this before beginning gentle nutrition goals.

What is Intuitive eating?

Intuitive Eating is a ‘self- care framework for eating’ which honors physical, mental and emotional health. Intuitive Eating may be used to guide the way in which we connect to our body, mind and relationship with food. Each of us are born intuitive eaters, but along the way, external factors disconnect us from our own internal guidance. Intuitive Eating consists of 10 unique principles which help us to explore and rediscover the power of our own body wisdom, by challenging our developed behaviors, beliefs and judgements about foods to better align with our unique needs and internal values. With over 100+ research studies to date, it is an evidenced based, weight neutral approach to nutrition care that views health through a wide, inclusive lens.

With all of this being said, Soulshine acknowledges that Intuitive Eating relies on a certain amount of food access and privilege, and strives to help ALL clients to honor their needs, keeping in mind unique barriers.

how do I know if my insurance will cover my nutrition visits?

Soulshine Nutrition is in network with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield. While all plans have different benefits and we cannot guarantee coverage, we encourage calling your insurance to ask the following questions:

  • Is Jennifer Ritchie (NPI: 1184221665 ) an in-network provider for my plan?

  • Does my plan cover outpatient nutrition services?

    • Do I have coverage for CPT codes 97802 & 97803 (medical nutrition therapy ) and/or S9470 (nutritional counseling)? How many visits are covered? How many units per visit are covered?

    • Do I have coverage for preventative services (ICD-10 code z71.3)? Is there a limit? If so, how many?

    • If no preventative services are covered, does my plan cover "medically necessary" visits? Do I need referral, and if so, from whom (therapist, PCP)? How should this be submitted to insurance?

  • Are telehealth visits covered?

  • Do I have a deductible to meet first? If so, how much is it and how much has been met so far?

  • Is there a copayment for each visit? If so, how much?

  • How many sessions are covered per year? What month does the policy year renew?

Please make a note of the representative name and reference number. This is helpful to have should you need to dispute a rejected claim.  Should insurance not cover your visits, you agree to be responsible for the visit at the out-of-pocket cost listed above.

how many visits will I need? what can i expect?

Because you are beautifully unique, it can be very difficult to predetermine how many nutrition visits you will need. Your dietitian will speak with you at your first visit about their recommendation for frequency of visits and continue to check in as you progress with your goals. Clients with the most success typically start with high frequency and gradually decrease over a non-specific period of time. Some clients benefit from weekly visits, while others are supported with monthly check-ins.

Depending on your needs, your dietitian may request that you also work with a therapist, primary care doctor, psychiatrist, or other team member to best support your holistic needs.

what happens if I can’t make my scheduled appointment?

We are human and completely understand that things come up! Please provide as much notice as possible to cancel or change appointment times. As an offering of human understanding, Soulshine will waive the first cancellation fee. Following this, a $75 fee will be charged for changes or cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice. Upon the second occurrence, the full price of the scheduled session will be collected. This allows Soulshine to honor and respect your time as much as our own. Thank you for your understanding!
