my food story:

I have always valued the natural world and rhythms of nature - the cyclic pattern of growth and the ways in which food supports us to flourish in our lives to be able to do the things most important to us. Connection to nature and these rhythms have been an important part of my own personal spirituality, and provided me with harmony, grounding and a deep appreciation of food, and the world around me.

Through my life journey, I found happiness being outdoors, admiring nature, gardening and exploring food in the kitchen. These experiences have rooted my love for the ways in which food connects us, not only to nature, but to ourselves, friends, family, culture, and community. My interest and curiosities propelled my decision to go back to school to pursue a Master in Nutrition and ultimately, become a dietitian.

I believe that each of us has our own ‘food story’ which often becomes disrupted because of societal complexities and a nutrition narrative driven by diet culture. As a dietitian, I have witnessed the role that health systems often play in this disruption by enforcing diet rules, demonizing foods, promoting one body type and often ignoring the social determinants of health, resulting in more barriers to wellness. This is NOT okay and lights my fire a little bit, y’all.

My priority as a dietitian is to listen and support you by providing nutrition counseling and education around ways you can honor your own food story and align with your values and goals. I have worked in general practice settings as well as the eating disorder field, serving clients at the partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient levels of care - and I have found that what each person has in common is the need to be heard and understood, truly, before any health, medical or nutrition advice will ever be supportive.

For fun:

I am a proud mama to an incredible ‘little’ girl who amazes me everyday. I have a loving partner who is a phenomenal chef, photographer and craftsman. We are beyond lucky to live nearby our wonderful families, in our home state of North Carolina. Within our home, we are surrounded by our 3 dogs, 2 cat and backyard chickens. We are working towards our dream of living on a farm with MANY other animals!

Favorite Food: Fries w/mayo! Fun fact, I lived in Holland for a few years as a child and I’m not sure if I picked up this appreciation there, but it feels deeply nostalgic. Also, it would be just wrong if I did not mention my mom’s pot roast as my favorite family meal - just warms your heart, ya know?

Favorite Fruit and Veg: Nothing beats a good juicy summer peach and roasted okra.

Odds & ends: I’m a mushroom lover. I’m convinced mushrooms will change the world. I love scouring the forest floor for new fungal finds, using trail guides to ID species, and reading foraging blogs and all the mind-blowing fungi research. For a fun watch - Fantastic Fungi is a beautiful documentary!
